The Exposed Patio That Takes Weather and Traffic

But in a freeze-thaw climate, outdoor concrete needs to breathe. If moisture gets under a non-breathable film and freezes, the coating lifts. Blisters. Flakes. Then you get to explain to your supervisor why the brand-new surface looks worse than the bare concrete.
Never expected the expensive 'weatherproof' coating to fail faster than a budget acrylic. But it did, because the slab wasn't allowed to breathe. The problem wasn't the product's price. It was trapped moisture doing exactly what physics tells it to do. Now I look for a vapor-permeable coating or a penetrating sealer. And before you ask about powder coating the concrete: that's a metal coating process. Your patio furniture might be powder coated, but your slab can't be. When did powder coating start? - Does water bead on it or soak in after a rain?
