I'm the office administrator for a 40-person industrial coatings applicator. I manage roughly $480,000 in annual supply orders across nine vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. All day, I get questions from our team, from clients, and from people searching online. These are the ones I keep answering.
What does Chemours actually do?
Chemours is a chemical company that became an independent business after a split from DuPont in 2015. For most buyers, the product categories that come up are Chemours Teflon coating materials, titanium dioxide pigments, and specialty industrial chemicals. A lot of people think "Teflon" means nonstick cookware only. But commercially, the bigger story is fluoropolymer coatings for fasteners, valves, processing equipment, and architectural metal. What matters to me is traceability: a branded coating system means we can tell a customer exactly what was applied, at what thickness, and which batch. That's the part that saves time at the end of a project.
Is Chemours Teflon coating the same as powder coating?
No. Powder coating is a dry finishing process. Ground polymer particles are sprayed onto an electrically grounded part, then cured in an oven. The resulting layer is thick and tough—usually 60 to 100 microns. Chemours Teflon coating is a different family. Most Teflon finishes are applied as liquids in multiple layers and then baked, leaving a very different surface with non-stick, low-friction properties.

Teflon coatings are better where release, friction, or chemical resistance is the priority. Verify the product name, the revision date, and the supplier name. Under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), an SDS has 16 sections. The sections I actually read are Section 2 (hazards), Section 4 (first aid), and Section 9 (physical and chemical properties). I also check Section 16 for the revision date.
From the outside, it looks like every SDS from a given manufacturer is basically the same. It's not. A Teflon coating intermediate and a titanium dioxide slurry have completely different handling requirements. In 2022, a vendor sent an outdated SDS, and the shipment got rejected at the receiving dock. Now I verify before the PO is issued.
What is the chemical formula of sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide is NaOH. It's also called caustic soda or lye. I keep a reference card near the chemical storage area because the name "sodium hydroxide" sounds less aggressive than "caustic soda," but they're the same compound. The formula matters for calculating dilution, neutralization, and disposal. It's also important for PPE decisions: solid flake NaOH and a 50% liquid solution are not the same to handle, even though the formula is identical. Now buyers are checking SDSs, certificates of analysis, and lot traceability before the purchase order is cut. The fundamentals haven't changed—the part still has to perform. But the execution has transformed. When I compared our 2023 purchasing files to 2021, the time spent on documentation was, I want to say, about double—I'd have to pull the numbers, but the stack of folders was noticeably taller. That's not all bad. It caught a few discrepancies before they turned into rejected shipments.
